Helen Turner’s joint is one of the smokiest barbecue spots around. Located a mile off tiny Brownsville’s town-center, Mrs. Turner cooks on an open pit; a simple, yet effective operation: bricks, metal fencing, hot coals, plenty of smoke, and meat.

This barbecue place is definitely a hidden treasure! I went with my family and ordered a variety of dishes to share. The ribs were smoky and tender, and the coleslaw paired nicely as a refreshing side. My kids loved the small plates, which made it easy for them to sample everything. Service was friendly and quick, which is always a plus when dining out. If I had to point out one thing, it would just be that the seating can get a bit cramped during peak hours, but that just means it’s popular for a reason! Overall, this spot is perfect for a casual meal and is certainly family-friendly.

Absolutely loved my experience here! The atmosphere is super cozy, and the food is just amazing. I had the beef brisket, and it melted in my mouth. The staff was super friendly, making the whole experience even better. Just a small note, they only accept cash, which caught me off guard, so be prepared! But trust me, it's worth it!

I stumbled upon this place after a day of exploring the area, and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I made! The moment I walked in, I was greeted by the rich aroma of smoked meats and a friendly smile from the staff. I opted for the brisket platter, and let me tell you—each bite was packed with flavor and perfectly tender. The sides were just as impressive; the mac and cheese had a creamy texture that contrasted beautifully with the smoky meat. I also tried their homemade barbecue sauce, which had the right balance of sweet and tangy. Atmosphere-wise, it felt cozy and inviting, making it a great spot for families or even a casual lunch with friends. The only little hiccup I encountered was that it was a cash-only establishment, so make sure to plan accordingly. Overall, this gem is a must-try for anyone who appreciates great barbecue. I can't wait to return and explore the rest of the menu!

I visited this barbecue spot on a whim during my recent trip, and wow, am I glad I did! The pulled pork sandwich was out of this world, juicy and flavorful, piled high on a soft bun. I also had the chance to chat with Mrs. Helen, who was incredibly welcoming and passionate about her food. The outdoor seating area is nice, especially on a sunny day, and it adds to the laid-back vibe. Surprisingly, the prices were quite reasonable, which is a bonus for such high-quality food. The only downside is that they close pretty early, so make sure you arrive before 7 PM if you want to enjoy dinner. I’ll definitely be back next time I'm in the area!
